Fabulous wedding destinations can be found across the globe, but none is more underrated than Mexico City. This cultural hub promises ample activities, beautiful sights, and culinary indulgences—all a quick flight from any major U.S. city. As destination wedding planners who embrace the authentic experience of every place we go, we’ve fallen hard for this location and are excited to share it with you. So, grab a comfy seat (and maybe a margarita!) and join us for a dive into destination weddings in Mexico City.
Why We Love Destination Weddings in Mexico City
An Unexpected Destination
When most people think of destination weddings in Mexico, they think of the beach. Mexico City is not usually on anyone’s radar. So, you can surprise your guests with a fabulous experience! We consider this destination to be up-and-coming. While it may not jump to mind right now as a wedding destination, give it a few years, and we believe the fashion set will be flocking here.
Ease of Travel
Mexico City is easy to travel to from almost anywhere in the States. Unlike most European destinations, your guests can feasibly arrive on Thursday or Friday and leave on Sunday, if they choose. This fast turnaround time is worth considering if you know that many of your guests will want to return to work shortly after the wedding (especially if you are not getting married in the summer).
A Cultural Hub
Few know that the food, fashion, art, and culture scene in Mexico City is next-level. It’s like a best-kept secret! Other cities have begun taking cues from Mexico City gastronomically and sartorially. It is a true, thriving cultural hub that has only just started to capture the eyes of the world.
World-Class Hospitality
A thriving cultural scene depends on exceptional hospitality, and Mexico City delivers on this expectation. We had one of our best experiences with a caterer there! The wedding vendors are welcoming and highly skilled at their crafts. However, you will want to bring in entertainment from the States, as most bands only speak Spanish.
Activities Galore
Mexico City has museums, parks, and other opportunities to enrich guests’ experience, including cultural activities like the Xochimilco River Cruise. Chapultepec Park is twice the size of Central Park and full of green spaces and artisan vendors! There are handmade items from all over Mexico, so leave room in your suitcase. It is also a short drive from the city to several Mesoamerican pyramids for guests seeking a glimpse of the country’s rich history.
Our Favorite Mexico City Wedding Venues
Familiar hotel brands can be found on Reforma Drive, including Ritz, Four Seasons, and Fourtisa. These venues are tried-and-true. In addition, the recently renovated JW Marriott boasts incredible food and hospitality. Its location in Palanco—the hottest neighborhood in Mexico City, with the best food and drink—rivals any other!
However, these three venues are our favorites for those seeking a unique experience that can only be found in Mexico City.
Proyecto Público Prim
This stylish venue in the Juarez neighborhood near downtown Mexico City offers two distinct event spaces: General Prim and Barcelona. Juarez is ideal for a destination wedding since it is near the city hub but not IN it. Mexico City has a lot of traffic, so the outer neighborhoods are best when selecting a venue.
The Barcelona space can accommodate up to 150 people and is located around the street from General Prim. We love the covered courtyard in the center, which evokes Old Mexico City! Prim is the larger space, housed in a historic residence with an upper courtyard looking down into the main ballroom. There are also additional spaces you can rent throughout the hotel.
We rented the entire space for Sydney Watters’ January wedding at Prim (as featured in Vogue!). Every event occurred within the venue’s two spaces, including the DJ-ed late-night afterparty. It’s a beautiful location that fits our venue philosophy to a tee: find a space you already think looks amazing, that you can enhance, instead of finding a blank slate to cover up.
Casa Xipe
This intimate garden wedding venue is in the Coyoacán neighborhood (not far from Frida Kahlo’s home, Casa Azul!). Fusing natural minimalism and culinary excellence, it is ideal for an al fresco event. There is a permanent tent in case of inclement weather and onsite catering, so there is not a lot that you have to bring into the space. This is a huge selling point for couples who would rather avoid complicated logistics when planning their destination wedding.
Casino Español de México
Formerly the residence of the Mexican president, this venue has a grand feel unmatched by any other location in the city. The on-site restaurant crafts delicious Spanish food and will cater your event, so there is no need for outside food. We love this location for receptions, rehearsal dinners, or welcome parties because of the unique culinary experience it offers your guests. Like Prim, this venue is located near downtown but manages to skirt the city’s most highly trafficked sections.
Planning an event in a different country can be logistically challenging. That’s where an experienced professional planner comes in.
